授業の概要Course Overview
The course provides an introductory framework for understanding human rights, nationalism, ethnicity and ethnic conflict. The field of ethnic conflict studies has faced critical challenges. Ethnic conflicts have often destroyed existing governance structures, causing social dislocation and devastation. They have been major sources of resentment and animosity among individuals, groups, and societies. Additionally, they have inflicted gross violations of human rights and posed significant threats to human security. The nature and character of ethnic conflict have never been static but are unpredictably dynamic. The field ethnic conflict studies, therefore, must effectively respond to these critical challenges. Drawing on a wide range of disciplines and approaches, this course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the theories, concepts, and analytical methods used in the study of ethnic conflict. It also seeks to equip students with a nuanced understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of current approaches to ethnic conflict management. The course begins with a discussion of the meaning of ethnicity and nationalism. It then explores the various causes of conflicts, followed by analyses of their consequences, peacebuilding, reconciliation, and the current critical issues, such as migration and racism. The course concludes by examining the broader implications of ethnicity and ethnic conflict studies in a global context.
事前・事後学習、時間等Study Required outside Class(Preparation, etc.)
The course entails a serious – but manageable – commitment to the readings, in order to understand lectures and participate in class discussions. As for preparation, students are expected to spend about 200 minutes outside of lecture studying, and expected to have completed each session’s core readings by class time. As part of the preparation, students are expected to produce a one-page summary of the main ideas and arguments presented by the readings.

成績評価Evaluation
成績評価の方法 / Evaluation Method
The requirements for this course consist of oral presentations, class discussions and composition of papers. The written requirements consist of one take-home exam, held at mid-term, and one final essay on a topic of the student's choice with the approval of the course instructor. Grades will be determined as follows:
Oral presentations and participation in class discussions: 40%
Mid-term take-home exam: 30%
Final essay: 30%
