授業の概要Course Overview

This course enables students to explore a wide range of practical areas of English-Japanese (both ways) translation through a close exploration of selected texts and independent work on associated tasks. The objective is to allow students to acquire and further develop skills, competencies and procedures applicable in the process of translation.

事前・事後学習、時間等Study Required outside Class(Preparation, etc.)

Sessions are divided according to the direction of translation into Japanese to English (J>E) and English to Japanese (E>J) with some degree of flexibility when appropriate. Each session consists of a variety of teaching items, only representative ones are listed. Texts for translation, exercises and associated materials will be distributed in class in advance. Short, unseen texts (including audio materials) and mini-quizzes may be used in class to monitor progress and identify areas that require further attention. Students will be required to translate and annotate texts in advance and to prepare for critical evaluation of their own and peers’ translation attempts. Students are also expected to actively participate in discussions and to present their findings through the “Translator’s Diary".

課題の種類・内容Homework, Assignments, etc.

Homework assignments (texts for translation and translation exercises) will be distributed on a regular basis and students are expected to present their work for peer evaluation in class. Students will be asked to keep a record (Translator's Diary) of their translation attempts as well as lists of specialist vocabulary, topic-related terminology and expressions that they encountered when performing translation tasks.
