授業の概要Course Overview

This course will highlight certain topics for students to gain insight into English and English linguistics. We will focus on semantics, pragmatics and language and culture, as they relate to English. We will frequently contrast English with Japanese (and, less frequently, other languages) in order to gain insight into why English is the way it is.

課題の種類・内容Homework, Assignments, etc.

You will be given two types of homework. One type will be questions that you will think about at home and then discuss with small groups of classmates. We will review the answers in class. You will not be graded on these but you will need to understand them in order to pass the exams. The other type of homework will involve watching some TED talks, making notes on them, and choosing your favorite one and doing a presentation about that talk. You will get a grade for this type of homework.)

成績評価の方法 / Evaluation Method

Midterm Exam 40% + Final Exam 40%. If you do not understand the homework questions and answers, you won't be able to pass these two tests! You will be allowed to use only one handwritten page (A4) of notes for the midterm exam, and that plus one additional page for the final exam. Finally, your TED talks homework and your presentation will count for the last 20% of the grade.

履修上の注意Other Course Information

- Please plan to come to class. If you do not show up to class, you will do poorly on the homework and final exam. Many/most questions will be from lecture, not from the book or videos. If you don’t come to class, it will be difficult or impossible for you to pass the final exam. It is a good idea to come to class. If you miss 5 classes, you cannot pass the course.
- No academic dishonesty will be tolerated. This includes plagiarism, fabrication, cheating, and academic misconduct.

Suggestions: Keep your mind open. Engage with the material. Relax and enjoy yourself. What you get out of it depends on what you put into it, so work hard but happily!

More suggestions: After a good night’s sleep, on the morning of our class, meditate, exercise, and eat a healthy breakfast with protein (and a healthy lunch as well for afternoon classes). Then, be in class on time and ready to participate. If you are sleepy, drink some coffee or tea so you have the mental energy to fully participate in class.
