This course aims at fostering students' awareness and deepening their understanding of the various issues associated with intercultural communication. Students will acquire the practical communication skills needed to consider how the phenomena related to intercultural communication are constructed from diverse perspectives and to engage in appropriately eloquent discussion. After successful completion of the course, students will demonstrate effective communication practices in the diverse work place and global business, so that knowledge and perspectives are acquired to increase their communication competence.

Students will gain knowledge about research methods and various theories and concepts that provide a framework for understanding communication in intercultural contexts. After successful completion of the course, students will be able to identify the intercultural issues with regard to social aspects and apply their knowledge and competence to actual problem solving.

授業の概要Course Overview

1. Global Liberal Arts (GLA) courses are designed as "Joint Study Course" where Japanese students and international students learn together. Students will explore the "unique characteristics of Japan – including distinctive features, strengths, weaknesses" as well as "global contexts and trends" across various fields. Through the perspective of "Japan in the global context," students will recognize the differences between Japan and the world and collaboratively envision a better future for the world.
2. In addition to theoretical instruction through lectures, GLA courses emphasize collaboration between Japanese and international students through activities such as group work and discussions. The primary language of instruction will be English.
3. This advanced seminar focuses specially on the study of intercultural communication, and this class improve students' awareness as well as understanding of various issues in intercultural interactions. Concepts and theories covered in this class provide students a framework to understand the importance of “self” and “Other” identities in intercultural contexts.

課題の種類・内容Homework, Assignments, etc.

1. Reading assignments: A pair of students is required to read assigned materials and present it in the class session.
2. Group presentation: You need to participate in a group project. A group of three or four conducts a small research on the Internet and create a presentation material in English. A presentation will be scheduled in the end of the semester.
3. Take-home final exam: You need to complete a final paper about specific questions, which is related to both intercultural and organizational communication. It is a comprehensive exam.
*Details about these assignments and exam should be instructed in class.

The assignments of textbook presentation and group project are evaluated in 40% effectively and a take-home exam takes 60% in the total grade.

1. Course Schedule
GLA courses are conducted in accordance with the academic calendar for the international student program “International Division”, and therefore follow a schedule that partially differs from the regular undergraduate academic calendar.

2. Language Proficiency
Since the primary language of instruction for GLA courses is English and GLA courses are designed as joint classes for international and Japanese students, the following language proficiency levels are recommended. However, students are still welcome to enroll even if they do not meet these levels.
Recommended Language Proficiency Levels:
- Eiken Pre-1 or higher
- TOEIC 600 or higher
- TOEFL ITP 480 or higher
- TOEFL iBT 54 or higher
- IELTS 5.0 or higher

※ 定員を超える履修希望者がいた場合、所属学部・学年等を考慮のうえ、抽選により受講者を決定します。
