授業の概要Course Overview

The goals of this seminar course are:
1) To further deepen and broaden your understanding of the plays of William Shakespeare
2) To broaden your understanding of the ways by which literary and dramatic works are adapted to film and other media
3) To engage in and report on your own research into the adaptation of a literary text

Goals 1 and 2: In this seminar, we will study one play by Shakespeare: Othello (1603). We will focus on interpretations and performances of the play and discuss the ways in which it has been adapted for the screen.

Goals 2 and 3: As well as taking part in our class study of Othello, you will choose your own literary text, examine how it has been adapted for the screen or other media, and present your research to the class in mid-semester and final presentations.

事前・事後学習、時間等Study Required outside Class(Preparation, etc.)

Two classes’ worth of independent study is required for each class. Students are required to do the following tasks for each class:

1) Before each class, preview sections of the play that will be studied in the next class (30% of the study time required outside of class).
2) After each class, review sections of the play studied; complete follow-up activities and Moodle quizzes on the play; prepare presentations (70% of the study time required outside of class).

As well as weekly preparation for in-class discussion of Othello, students will prepare for two presentations on their individual research.

Homework will consist of regular reading of Othello, Moodle quizzes and other follow-up activities related to the play, independent research reading, and preparation for individual presentations.

Students taking this seminar who are planning to write an English graduation thesis of approx. 5,000 words for submission in January 2026 should register separately (卒業論文(7)).

This seminar will be held weekly during both spring and autumn semesters. If you need to be absent for job-hunting activities, it is essential that you inform me in advance and that you make sure that you have completed the required preview and review activities for any sessions that you miss.
