授業の概要Course Overview

Theodor W. Adorno once said, “To lend a voice to suffering is a condition for all truth.”[*] This Global Issues course, with a special focus on the role of science and technology on the environment, strives to listen to the voices of the victims. We will read Viktor E. Frankl's classic, "Man's Search For Meaning" (ISBN 1846046386), Izzeldin Abuelaish's "I Shall Not Hate : a Gaza doctor's journey on the road to peace and human dignity" (ISBN 1408822091), and Richard Lloyd Parry's "Ghosts of the Tsunami: Death and Life in Japan's Disaster Zone" (ISBN 1250192811) .
The course emphasizes active learning. You will lead discussions (both big and small group discussions) and actively engage in a process of inquiry, reflection, discovery, and further investigation. You will write response papers and workshop response papers of your peers.

事前・事後学習、時間等Study Required outside Class(Preparation, etc.)

Classes are based on prior reading assignments and the viewing of video materials. The reading load is moderate to heavy, and some readings are dense. Altogether it will require 200 minutes of study outside class.
For student presentations, you need to collaborate with your peers to prepare for a presentation. You are expected to conduct your own research for the final report.

履修上の注意Other Course Information

○ TOEIC-IPテストで510点以上、もしくはそれに相当する語学力を有することが望ましい。
○ 教科書/テキストは英語版ないし日本語版のどちらか一方を購入すれば良いです。日英2冊とも購入する必要はありません。
○ 課題に行き詰まる前に、オフィス・アワーを積極的に利用してください。授業に関するフィードバックを随時受け付けます。
○ 【剽窃・盗用 （他人やAIによる文章【英訳・和訳を含む】や学説などを自分のものとして発表すること）について】たったの一文だけであっても、剽窃や盗用が判明した場合はPlagiarism 剽窃・盗用とみなします。1回目は全体評価をA→B, B→C, C→Dと1ランク落とします。2回目が判明した場合は、成績は自動的にC。3回目が判明した場合は、単位無し（失格）とします。
