授業の概要Course Overview

How do language, society, and culture relate? How is power related to language use? How does society influence language, and language, society? How are social categories and norms related to language, and how do people use language to display their identity? What are the connections between gender and language? What is linguistic taboo, and why does it exist? How is language used to create humor? How are linguistic and social expectations challenged and for what purposes?

These are some of the questions that we will ask in this course. As we try to answer them, we will explore how language can be studied systematically on many levels, using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Through readings and in-class lecture, discussion, and analysis, students will hone their awareness of linguistic features and their analytical skills, as well as their critical evaluations of argumentation, and they will learn to recognize and analyze the social functions language serves.

事前・事後学習、時間等Study Required outside Class(Preparation, etc.)

Students will be assigned university-level readings in social linguistics, and will need to read and review them before coming to class. This will take 120-150 minutes per week. In class, the instructor will highlight important points in the reading and add information, making connections and showing various analyses. Students will need to review the content of lectures; this will take about 60-80 minutes per week.

成績評価の方法 / Evaluation Method

Midterm Exam 50% and Final Exam 50%. If you do not understand the homework questions and answers, you won't be able to pass these two tests! You will be allowed to use only one handwritten page (A4) of notes for the midterm exam, and that plus one additional page for the final exam.

履修上の注意Other Course Information

- Please plan to come to class. If you do not show up to class, you will do poorly on the homework and exams. Many/most questions will be from lecture, not from the book or videos. If you don’t come to class, it will be difficult or impossible for you to pass the exams. It is a good idea to come to class.

- No academic dishonesty will be tolerated. This includes plagiarism, fabrication, cheating, and academic misconduct.

Suggestions: Keep your mind open. Engage with the material. Relax and enjoy yourself. What you get out of it depends on what you put into it, so work hard but happily!

More suggestions: After a good night’s sleep, on the morning of our class, meditate, exercise, and eat a healthy breakfast with protein (and a healthy lunch as well for afternoon classes). Then, be in class on time and ready to participate. If you are sleepy, drink some coffee or tea so you have the mental energy to fully participate in class.
