授業の概要Method of Instruction

この授業では、次の指導と演習を行う。
・多読、黙読(SSR)、読解速度を測るリーディング演習により読解力を身につける。
・プレビュー演習、スキャニング演習、パラグラフのトピックとメインアイデアの識別、パラグラフ構成パターンの理解を通じ、読解力と共に推論する力も身につける。
・辞書と類義語辞典を使いながら学習することで語彙力を伸ばし、コンテクストから単語の意味を推測し、派生語と単語の語幹、接頭語、接尾語を理解する。
・ペアーもしくは小グループでのディスカッションを通して自身と他者の意見を比較し、単語や文章の理解を強化し、著者の視点や目的など主要な内容を理解する。
・自身のリーディングのプロセスを振り返り、リーディングへのアプローチを自己評価することで確かな読解力を身に付ける。

以上の目的で、本授業では科学についての英文記事を読みアカデミックな英語読解力向上を図る。研究者による学術論文ではなく、スミソニアン誌やEurekAlert!といったオンラインプラットフォームに、サイエンスコミュニケーターたちによって投稿された研究紹介記事を扱う。

事前・事後学習、時間等Study Required outside Class(Preparation, etc.)

Two classes’ worth of independent study is required for each session. Students are required to do the following tasks for each session:
・Prior to each session, preview textbook content, vocabulary, and reading skills to be studied (30% of the study time required outside of class).
・After each session, review class content, including vocabulary and reading skills studied and complete review reading and discussion preparation tasks (70% of the study time required outside of class).
