授業の概要Method of Instruction

This course provides an introduction to the sociological and anthropological study of violence. We will study the perspectives of victims, victimizers, bystanders and women, and examine the use of terror and science (race theory, political economy, etc.) as a means of imperialist and colonialist expansion in nineteenth and twentieth century Europe, Africa, and the New World. The course emphasizes active learning. You will lead discussions (both big and small group discussions) and actively engage in a process of inquiry, reflection, discovery, and further investigation. You will write response papers and workshop response papers of your peers. Part of the course will be COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) with students from the University of Macau, China, Kyushu University, and lectures from Yad Vashem (The World Holocaust Remembrance Center) in Israel.
