In this course we will study mass communication theory and examine specific issues arising from the effects of mass media in both Japan and the United States. We will focus in particular on message content and how mass mediated messages influence individuals and society as a whole. Your goal is to become critical users of mass media.

Students' ability to apply the various media theories and concepts we discuss in class will be demonstrated by student projects and presentations. This will require students to understand and apply media theory to actual r3eal world media situations.

授業の概要Method of Instruction

【授業の概要】
While we will attempt to complete a broad overview of mass communication theory, a central focus will be to develop students’ media literacy skills. In the process we will be looking at such things as television violence and its effects on children, the effect of mass media on public opinion, media influence on public perceptions in general, the role of mass media in framing the news and issues of the day, advertising, and other current topics that arise during the course of the semester or that students have a particular interest in.
The course will be divided into five sections:
I Introduction and overview: Mass Media, Mass Culture, and Media Literacy
II Mass Media Effects and Perception
III News, New Media, and Public Relations
IV Advertising, Propaganda, and Persuasion
V Student Research Projects
A short exam will follow after each section. The final 3 periods of class will be given over to students group presentations on media research.

履修上の注意Other Course Information

Students must receive at minimum of 60% (average) on written exams to receive credit for the class. (15/25)

TOEIC-IPテストで650点以上、もしくはそれに相当する語学力を求める。
ただし、定員を超過した場合は、語学力と通算GPAを総合的に勘案し、選抜する。
