To acquire the ability to read intensively and extensively in English, aiming at the class target proficiency level.

授業の概要Method of Instruction

The goal of this course is to improve students’ English reading proficiency in four areas: 1) intensive reading; 2) reading strategies; 3) vocabulary; 4) extensive reading. The intensive reading strand of this course involves reading materials in various genres. Class activities will include comprehension and fluency-focused reading, vocabulary-building, and an explicit focus on reading strategies such as skimming and scanning. In the extensive reading strand of the course, students will select and read at least five books from the Seinan Library Extensive Reading Collection, according to individual interest; and write book reports on the books chosen. Students’ extensive reading activities will also be checked online via MReader.

事前・事後学習、時間等Study Required outside Class(Preparation, etc.)

Two classes’ worth of independent study is required for each session. Students are required to do the following tasks for each session:
・Prior to each session, preview textbook content, vocabulary, and reading strategies to be studied (20% of the study time required outside of class).
・After each session, review class content, including vocabulary and reading strategies studied; read graded readers; write graded reader book reports and record reading progress using MReader (80% of the study time required outside of class).

Follow-up vocabulary and reading tasks will be set each week. In addition, students will be expected to complete five graded reader book reports outside of class.
