授業の到達目標Objectives to be Attained

This course focuses on developing communication skills in English through carefully guided activities emphasizing the skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing, as well as critical thinking. Using authentic and relevant content from National Geographic, including video, charts, and other informative graphics, students will be encouraged to work effectively and confidently on improving their foreign language communication skills in an academic environment. The main goal of the course is to enable students to advance to higher levels of communicative competence.

授業の概要Method of Instruction

B.K.クリスチャンス sessions will use “Pathways Listening and Speaking (L/S) Split 2A” and R.M.ソーレス sessions will use “Pathways Reading and Writing (R/W) Split 2A.”

[B.K.クリスチャンス: Pathways L/S Split 2A]
Classes will focus on explicit instruction in and practice of listening skills (such as note-taking, listening for reasons and opinions, and making inferences from context) and speaking skills (including clarifying and rephrasing, and pronunciation), as well as presentation activities based on the topic of each unit.

[R.M.ソーレス: Pathways R/W Split 2A]
Classes will focus on explicit instruction in and practice of reading skills (such as note-taking, identifying main ideas, inference, and prediction), as well as vocabulary-building and writing tasks based on the topic of each unit.

Both L/S and R/W classes will include activities to build academic skills, such as critical thinking and discussion.

事前・事後学習、時間等Study Required outside Class(Preparation, etc.)

Study outside class consists of regular review of each unit, and preview of the subsequent unit. Use of the free, downloadable content from the publisher is an important component of this review and preview. Online Workbooks include automatically graded activities and video clips for students to practice the skills taught in the student books.

The instructor will observe students’ discussions and other in-class tasks. Feedback will also include checks and brief comments on students’ engagement in oral and paper-based activities.

成績評価の方法・基準Evaluation Criteria/Method

Evaluation will include assessment of in-class discussions and presentations (25 percent), in-class quiz answering (25 percent), assignments (25 percent), and tests (25 percent).
